Our story

In 1981, Kalevi Niemi obtained a transport licence and 100 moving boxes for his garage. From these humble beginnings began the story of a family business that grew rapidly. The family was fully involved: mother Aune took care of orders, and the children took responsibility for expanding the business. By 1987, the company had 15 employees and its first premises.

In the 1990s, Niemi grew strongly. New premises in Pitäjänmäki, Helsinki, and the desire to serve customers as well as possible spurred the company’s growth. The EU Presidency projects brought new customers, and at the turn of the millennium Niemi renewed its image with the slogan “Niemi changes everything”. The red moving trucks became a familiar feature of the cityscape.

In the 2000s, Niemi expanded its activities into international migration and was responsible for the logistics of the Ice Hockey World Championships and the World Athletics Championships. The construction of the Eurovision Song Contest was another milestone. In 2009, the company became the first Finnish company to be accepted as a member of Fedemac, the European removals association. In the same year, the company also became a member of IAM, the International Association of Movers. By 2010, the company already had six branches throughout Finland.

2011 Niemi adopted a new name, Niemi Services Ltd. The company awarded its first Maailmanmuuttaja -reward to President Martti Ahtisaari and the CMI organisation he headed at the time. Niemi Palvelut joined the Association for Finnish Work and received the Key Flag in recognition of its Finnish work.

By 2020, Niemi Services covers the whole of Finland. In recent years, the company has opened offices in Rovaniemi, Kuopio and Vaasa. An investment by CapMan’s Special Situations fund in 2022 gave further impetus to the development. Niemi is now Finland’s leading provider of moving and logistics services, known for its responsibility and innovative solutions.

As it enters its fifth decade, Niemi continues to grow and develop. Continued investment in customer experience and responsibility ensures the company’s place at the top of its industry. Niemi is not only transforming homes, but expanding its operations from transformation to change and from recycling to the circular economy.
