Insurance for International Moves

Niemi Services Ltd. strives to minimize all possible damages through proper packaging and handling. However, it should be noted that the international moving process is long and involves multiple parties handling the transportation. This means that clearly identifying the event that caused the damage can often be challenging. In such situations, the compensation for damages may be minimal compared to the actual value of the goods. In addition, different modes of transportation introduce additional handling procedures, strain, and unpredictable risks.

Standard insurance policies (such as home, personal property, or vehicle insurance) generally provide very limited coverage for damage incidents involving the transportation or handling of your personal belongings abroad.

Niemi Services Ltd. removal insurance is provided by Oskar Schunck GmbH & Co.

The cost of the insurance

The insurance cost is calculated based on the declared total value according to the percentages in the table below. The minimum insurance cost for all levels of coverage is 150.00 €. No VAT is added to the insurance cost.

What if I don’t order the insurance?

Niemi’s statutory responsibility for movable property is based on the Road Haulage Contracts Act (in Finnish Tiekuljetussopimuslaki) and the General Conditions of the Nordic Association of Freight Forwarders (NSAB 2015). The liability for damage is restricted to no more than EUR 20/kg for domestic transport and SDR 8.33/kg for international transport (per kilogram of gross weight short). For other parts, when Niemi is liable for the damage, the compensation will comply with the General Conditions of the Nordic Association of Freight Forwarders (NSAB 2015), where the liability for damage is restricted to no more than SDR 8.33/kg (per kilogram of gross weight short).

However, it should be noted that the international moving process is long and involves multiple parties handling the transportation. This means that clearly identifying the event that caused the damage can often be challenging. If the party causing the damage cannot be clearly identified, Niemi is not responsible for the damage.

EXAMPLES OF COMPILING AN INSURANCE LIST

You should provide as detailed information as possible about the items to be insured. Items of different values should be itemized separately. For instance, if out of ten paintings, two are valued at 2 000 € each and eight at 1 000 € each, the list should be itemized as follows:

ArticleNo. of itemsReplacement value
Painting (print)88000 €
Painting (oil)24000 €

Similar items with the same value can be combined for easier listing:

ArticleNo. of itemsReplacement value
Clothes2001000 €

The insurance list can also be created using your own format, such as an Excel or Word document, as long as it contains the same information.

Insurance levels

Basic Cover (Total Loss)

A limited insurance based on the internationally recognized Institute Cargo Clauses ICC (B) condition, covering, for example, shipments not packed by the moving company. The insurance covers certain risks such as ship sinking, fire, theft, and total loss. For instance, according to maritime law, if a ship is involved in an accident, any resulting losses and costs are shared proportionately between the carrier and the owners of the shipments. The basic cover insurance covers such unforeseen expenses.

Comprehensive Cover (Replacement)

Insurance covering all risks according to Institute Cargo Clauses ICC (A) condition. In addition to the basic cover, it covers damages, breakages, and partial losses. The insurance also covers antiques and fragile items without increasing the insurance premium.

Supreme Cover (Replacement Plus)

The most comprehensive insurance, which, in addition to the lower-level insurances, covers claims related to pairs and sets of items and mechanical failures. The premium is based on the declared total value, not the value of specific items.

***If antiques, furniture or works of art can be repaired, the insurer will compensate the cost of repairing the damaged items. If the value of damaged antiques, furniture, or art decreases as a result of a repair duly confirmed by the inspector, the insurer will compensate the impairment up to a maximum of 10% of the sum insured, up to a maximum of EUR 10 000, – a single item.
****The insurer compensates for indirect financial damage caused by delays due to strikes or riots at the port of transshipment and / or port of destination, provided that the goods have been dispatched before the start of the event and the policyholder could not have been aware of the event.

Frequently askes questions about insurance for international moves

  • Along with household goods and personal belongings you can insure your car, motorbike, or boat. Please consider that goods should not be packed inside the vehicle.

  • Simply indicate your desired insurance coverage on the customer information form, and we will obtain the insurance on your behalf. For more comprehensive insurance policies, you will need to complete a separate insurance list of the items to be insured. The insurance list must be returned to Niemi no later than 3 business days before packing begins.

  • The insurance value is determined based on the item’s replacement value. Each insured item’s value, corresponding to its replacement cost in the destination country, should be recorded on the insurance list. The total of the listed values represents the total insured value of the shipment.

Sometimes, it is impossible to replace an item with sentimental value or one that is unavailable in the destination country. In such cases, you can estimate the item’s replacement cost in the country of origin and account for the transportation costs to the destination country. Alternatively, you can estimate the compensation you would accept for the item in the event of damage.

The value of a vehicle must be determined based on its current market value, not its replacement value. A condition report must be made for the vehicle to verify its condition before transportation begins.
