How to make your move a success
Moving to a new home can feel stressful if you leave the preparations to the last minute. With the right tips and careful preparation, your move will go smoothly and efficiently. We’ve put together some practical tips to help you save time and stress.
Packing instructions
The secret to a successful move lies in good preparation. Whether you’re moving into your first home or moving to a larger apartment, these packing tips will ensure your belongings stay safe and sound during the move!
Check out our comprehensive moving checklist for advice on planning your move.
Packing Small Items
Reserve enough moving boxes. We recommend one moving box per square metre for home removals. Niemi’s solid moving boxes will protect your belongings during transport. These boxes can be easily stacked on top of each other. Fill the boxes only up to the carrying handle opening to keep them safe to carry and your belongings intact.
Good labelling makes moving and unpacking quicker. Stick moving labels on the long sides of the boxes and clearly mark which room the box belongs to.
Pack all your movables from desks, cupboards, drawers and shelves into moving boxes. No furniture will be moved with a full load. Carefully protect dishes, china and decorative items with silk paper or bubble wrap before packing.
Boards, mirrors and other breakable objects should be protected with heavy-duty bubble wrap. Clearly mark the packaging with the words “SUSPENSIBLE”. For televisions, you can rent a large or standard flat-screen TV box.
Personal clothing can be easily moved directly into the cupboards using wardrobe boxes. Alternatively, you can use durable garment bags that can hold around five garments and hangers. Seal the mouths of the bags with packing tape and leave the hanger hooks visible. Other clothes should be packed in boxes. Pack pillows, blankets and other bedding in the bags and seal them carefully with tape.
Pack personal toiletries, keys, equipment manuals and other important items in a separate attention box where you can quickly find them in your new home.
Furniture and floor protection
Protect all furniture well with heavy-duty bubble wrap to avoid dirt and damage. Pay particular attention to sensitive surfaces, such as high-gloss furniture and glass surfaces. For sofas and armchairs, we have sofa bags and mattress bags in different sizes.
Larger pieces of furniture, such as chests of drawers and cupboards, should be dismantled if possible. Lock cupboard doors and drawers with stretch wrap. Do not use adhesive tape, as this can damage the surface of the furniture.
It is very important to protect the flooring in walkways so that it is not damaged during the move. Unless otherwise agreed, the customer is responsible for protecting the floor surfaces. Please note that movers must wear safety shoes throughout the move. You can also leave the floor protection to the professionals and order the service from us.
Access to the removal site
The removal van must be parked unobstructed within 20 m of the front door for loading and unloading. Parking space should be reserved for the removal van, at the latest on the day before the move, especially if the yard or street is narrow.
Talk to our sales team if parking is a challenge, or if you are not sure whether you can park your car near the door. If necessary, for example in central Helsinki, we can apply to the city for a street reservation for your move.
