How much does an international move cost?

The most significant factor affecting the cost is the amount of personal belongings to be moved. Our international moving quotes are always based on the volume of the goods, measured in cubic meters. If the volume of goods is already known, we can provide a cost estimate based on that. In addition to the volume of the goods, the price is affected by the mode of transport and the moving conditions.

We are happy to assist with the assessment by arranging a free evaluation pre-move survey to the origin address. By arranging the survey, we are able to estimate the volume of the goods more accurately. During the visit, we can also review the service package and other details. We will evaluate the moving conditions, such as the apartment floor, the availability of an elevator, the proximity of the moving truck to the location, and whether a sea container can be brought near the site for direct loading. All these factors affect the cost of the move.

In such situations, the compensation for damages may be minimal compared to the actual value of the goods. Frequently asked questions about international moves

  • Carefully review the quotes and pay special attention to the following:

    Ensure that the request for quotation is understood correctly and that the origin and destination addresses are accurate. Make sure that the mode of transportation and schedules are the same for all service providers.

    Pay attention to the estimated volume of the moving goods. The estimate is always the representative’s assessment of the goods to be moved, and volumes may vary among service providers.

    Is the service package the same among all providers? Which services and materials are included in the total price, and which are charged as “additional work” (e.g., packing service, packing materials, floor protection, storage, cleaning service, customs clearance, insurance)?

    Does the quote mention potential additional costs due to moving conditions? Check which factors are included in the total price and which are charged separately (e.g., parking and traffic arrangements, parking permits, outside lifts).

    Does the quote include insurance? Moving companies often offer separate moving insurance. Check whether the insurance is included in the quoted price. Also, compare the contents of the insurances, including deductibles.

    Finally, ensure that the quote includes at least the following:

  • The international moving process typically proceeds as follows:

    1. If you’re happy with the quote, we will ask you to confirm the order using the order confirmation form.
    2. We will plan the schedules and details for the packing day together. We will collect all necessary documents for the shipment and begin the export customs clearance.
    3. On the packing day, the moving crew arrives according to the agreed schedule. The crew packs, protects, and loads the goods for transportation.
    4. After packing, we will confirm the total volume of the goods and update the transportation schedule.
    5. We will receive the shipment at the destination and begin the import customs clearance.
    6. We will plan the schedules and details for the delivery day together.
    7. On the delivery day, the moving crew arrives according to the agreed schedule. The crew carries the goods in, unpacks the goods from boxes and protective materials, and removes the packing debris.
  • We generally recommend contacting us about 1-3 months before the desired packing day. The earlier we start planning the move, the more we can affect on for example, the schedules of the move.

  • The mode of transportation is often determined by the destination country. In Europe, goods are primarily transported by road. Moves outside Europe mainly travel by sea freight in containers. For smaller or urgent shipments, we use air freight. We also offer courier services in Europe.

  • The shipping time always depends on the mode of transportation and the travel distance. Below are average shipping times from Finland to abroad:

    • By road to Central Europe: 3-7 days
    • By sea to North America: 30-40 days
    • By sea to Southeast Asia: 50-60 days
    • By air worldwide: 1-3 days

    We do not recommend shipping goods internationally without appropriate insurance. The international moving process is long and clearly identifying the event that caused the damage can often be challenging.   • For international shipments, we strongly recommend having goods packed by professionals. Packing according to international standards is often demanding and challenging, not comparable to a domestic move. International shipments must withstand various transportation conditions, and for example sea shipments can experience very rough weather conditions. Additionally, there may be issues with customs clearance if goods are not packed properly.

For sea and air freight, we recommend obtaining at least a basic level of insurance, either independently or through us. For instance, according to maritime law, if a ship is involved in an accident, any resulting losses and costs are shared proportionately between the carrier and the owners of the shipments.   • All necessary packing materials are always included in our full door-to-door moving services.

    Our online store offers a wide range of packing and protective materials. For international moves, cardboard boxes are always used. It is advisable to select box sizes according to their intended use, such as separate boxes for dishes, clothes, and books.   • Absolutely! Our full-service move always includes handling necessary customs formalities/move-related documents. Additionally, we can globally assist with relocation and immigration services, such as finding a home and registering personal information.

  • The required official documents always depend on the destination country. In the EU area, fewer documents are needed, and export or import clearances are generally not required. For exports and imports outside the EU, for which removal shipments are considered, export and import clearances are conducted. However, removal shipments are often exempt from customs duty and tax.

    When moving from Finland to a non-EU country, a copy of the shipper’s passport and the Customs export declaration form are required. Our customers receive the necessary forms for export clearance from us. Import clearance is completed at the destination, and our local partner will provide guidance on the required documents.

  • Removal goods exempt from customs duty and tax does not apply to alcoholic products, tobacco, or tobacco products; therefore, we do not recommend including them in moving shipments. If the shipment contains the above-mentioned products, they must be classified under commodity codes, and duties and taxes must be paid during import.

    Generally, removal shipments can include dry food items (e.g., cereals, noodles, spices) in their original unopened packages. However, this always depends on the mode of transport and the restrictions of the destination country. Always check with our experts for restrictions specific to your shipment.

    Exempt from customs duty and tax does not exempt from import restrictions. For example, the import of live animals, animal products, plants, plant parts, firearms, and ammunition is allowed only with strict conditions.   • Prohibited items in shipments vary depending on the mode of transport and the destination country.
